5 industries dominating the next 5 years of job security

April 26, 2023

Looking to upskill into a career path with plenty of job security and opportunities? Well then, it’s a good thing the Australian Government released a list of jobs that will be most in-demand across the next 5 years, based on shortages, expected growth and the Skills Priority List.

We’ve paired up each industry to a Flinders University or CQUniversity online course, so you can get qualified within the region. From civil engineering to aged care – these are the jobs we need the most.

1. Civil engineering

We’re constantly looking for civil engineers to plan, design and build the infrastructure that communities rely on to function – things you use everyday like roads, bridges, railways and water systems.

If you’re a maths wizz who loved Mathematical Methods, Physics, and Design in high school, then this will be right up your alley.

CQuniversity’s Bachelor of Engineering (Honours)(Civil Construction) and Diploma of Construction Management broadens your horizons into the construction sector. Alongside civil engineering skills, you’ll learn about financing, project scheduling and coordination of consultants and specialist contractors, along with skills in problem-solving, teamwork and professional practice.

2. Early childhood teaching

For those gifted with patience and a soft spot for kids, the childcare centres and kindergartens are calling out for help. We need nurturing individuals to help shape our kids’ futures, supporting their educational, social, and emotional development.

You’ll also be professionally registered as a teacher throughout Australia and be qualified to teach from Prep to Year 6 through CQUniversity’s Bachelor of Education (early childhood).

A key feature of this degree is that you’ll receive a Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care in your first 1-2 years of study, an interim award that will help you get into the field sooner!

3. Nursing

Nurses play an integral role in our healthcare system, taking care of our communities most vulnerable – the sick and injured.

With Flinders University’s Bachelor of Nursing, you would enter the rewarding and diverse workforce as a competent and effective Registered Nurse (Division 1) General.

Help develop strong and educated patients by providing and coordinating patient care, educating the public about various health conditions, and provide emotional support to patients and their loved ones.

This is a great option for regional students because you can always guarantee employment close to home. If not, you could always apply for the Royal Flying Doctors with your degree and help other rural people in need.

4. IT

As technology continues to evolve – so too does the demand for IT specialists. Technology is a part of our everyday life, and we all understand the frustration and inconvenience when it doesn’t work.

The backbone of most industries rely on technology in some form, that’s where future professionals like YOU come in. Whether it be at a government level, in a corporate chain, or even your local school – every business is in need of IT support. This kind of safety net is a career golden egg.

You can equip yourself for a career in IT at home through Flinders University’s Bachelor of Information Technology. You’ll cover the fundamentals in computing, networks and cybersecurity, computer programming, professional skills, database modelling, and software engineering.

5. Aged & disability care

Aged and disability care has been a newsworthy topic for quite some time now, making headlines with its worker shortage and high demand for professionals.

The rewarding job of taking care of our elderly will continue to be around as long as we are – so it’s worth investing in an Undergraduate Certificate in Aged Care if you’re a gentle person who thrives from helping others.

By studying a Flinders University Bachelor of Disability and Community Practice, you’ll also assist to improve the lives and potential of people with disability, promoting their right to live an inclusive life, develop strong emotional wellbeing and a good quality of life.

See how you can make a career from helping others here with our range of aged care degrees.
